La globalización del crimen organizado

Abstract

Una parte importante de los conocimientos que la mayoría de la gente tiene sobre el crimen organizado se sustenta en representaciones sociales cimentadas por dos grandes vías de conocimiento: los medios de comunicación y el denominado “género negro” de la literatura y el cine. Los medios de comunicación nos transmiten generalmente noticias sobre exitosas operaciones policiales, detenciones, decomisos grandes cantidades de droga... también sentencias condenatorias. Por su parte, la literatura y el cine policíacos generan, con frecuencia, una imagen idealizada o épica de estos peligrosos criminales, hasta el punto de que en Japón los Yakuza producen muchas películas que los ensalzan. Parece que la sociedad está derrotando a las gran- des organizaciones criminales. Pero la realidad parece ser más bien otra...Tal y como subraya en su atinado análisis Jean-François Gayraud, las principales mafi as son cada vez más poderosas aunque, gustan de operar herméticamente, amparados en perfi les de baja intensidad aunque, en ocasiones, sus líderes más megalomaníacos se desgas- tan en guerras abiertas contra los gobiernos, como sucedió en la década de 1990 con el boss de los corleonesi Totó Riina en Italia y en la actualidad está sucediendo con el Cártel de Juárez en México.
