Abstract

The prevention of educational failure and of the early school leaving is to be considered an objective of huge importance for all 27 countries belonging to EU, in the light of Lisbon strategy for 2020 targets.Italy, although recently improving its performance as the drop out rates, is still 5th on the bottom of 27 countries ranking. The book shows as sociology of education deals with the topic of school failure and school drop out, along with the last 4 decades studies. It explores also the search of an adequate explanatory models, which includes all typas of causes, such as: direct causes (as the failing choice of the secondary school), remote causes (as the attitude of parents towards the achievement of students), and hidden causes (as the willingness to get a job for reaching a so-called "working dream"). For local and national policies it is the case to renweal the figth against drop out, through the direct involvement of the three main "integration centre" of the problem:families, schools, entreprises.
