Abstract

In Italy, the participation to voluntary associations is an important phenomenon from a qualitative and quantitative point of view. This kind of social commitment is important not only for the sustainability of a lot of self-help and public interest activities but also its symbolic code, centered on gratuity and reciprocity. Despite some stereotypes, the relative involvement degree of young people in voluntary associations is still relevant even if – especially in the sector of care and social assistance - there are objective difficulties for replacing older volunteers with younger ones.
