3 essays in disaster risk, conflict, and tax evasion

Abstract

This thesis addresses three topics of academic and policy relevance: disaster risk, armed conflict, and tax evasion. It combines theoretical models with empirical techniques. The first chapter develops a method to estimate disaster probabilities from bond market data, showing that markets anticipate major crises. The second chapter, co-authored with Hannes Mueller, quantifies the long-term economic cost of conflict using a Markov model and simulations. The third chapter analyzes why international efforts to curb tax evasion have often failed, emphasizing the role of strategic coordination between tax havens and the need for harmonized global policies.
