Abstract

[eng] Study of criminal careers has become, in recent decades, a paradigm of knowledge that has changed the theoretical models of criminology, organizing and structuring available knowledge about individual delinquency, while providing relevant information on the nature of criminal behavior. In general, the scientific knowledge about the criminal trajectories of active chronic offenders is scarce and, in the Spanish case, nonexistent. Because of this, the overall objective of this study is to retrospectively study the life trajectory and criminal careers of a sample of violent and repeat offenders. The objectives of this thesis are twofold: (1) to analyze the criminal trajectories throughout the life in a sample of imprisoned violent delinquents; and (2) identify the major risk factors associated with violent criminal behavior. To achieve these objectives, official information was obtained on convictions imposed on a group of 50 violent repeat offenders and, also, self-reported information was collected through in-depth interviews, with the help of a tool designed for this purpose. Thanks to the information compiled through the official sources consulted and, to a greater extent, the information provided by the subjects during the interviews, a reliable picture of the personal and specifically criminal trajectory of the participants could be obtained, from childhood to adulthood. Data were subjected to several descriptive, correlational and predictive statistical analysis. Results of this thesis show that although the vital and criminal trajectory of this group of violent and repeat offenders responds in general to the parameters defined by the previous investigations, peculiar characteristics singularize them. These differences may be due to the condition of chronic offenders and may serve to improve the design and implementation of programs for the prevention and treatment of more serious crime.
