Abstract

Background. Many studies have been performed on therapeutic compliance in chronic diseases but not in acute processes such as infectious diseases. Poor compliance with antibiotic regimens has been identified as a major cause of treatment failure, resulting in poor clinical outcomes. There is a great reason to assess the drug-adherence in acute pathologies like non-complicated infections with suspected bacterial aetiology. Aim. To assess the drug-adherence to antibiotic therapy observed among patients with non-complicated respiratory tract infectious diseases and treated with different antibiotic regimens. Design. We performed a prospective and observational study in primary care offices. Setting of the study. This study was carried our in five general practices. Conclusions. The adherence rate to antibiotic therapy was low among patients with respiratory tract infections in our country, mainly when patients are given antibiotic regimens that have to be administered thrice or four times per day.
