Abstract

The aim of this doctoral thesis is to advance in the knowledge of the relations uniting the economy and the environment. On the basis of an input-output analysis different methodological developments are put forward to study the impact of the Catalan economy in terms of atmospheric pollution. In economic terms, Catalonia is one of the most important regions of Spain and it has relevant distinctive characteristics compared to the rest of the state. Although the intensity of its CO2 emissions is lower than the Spanish average, in the last two decades the increase of these emissions in percentage terms has been notably higher than that of the rest of the country. The different energy metabolism of the Catalan economy compared to the rest of Spain, as well as the important commercial relations existing between both regions, renders the analysis of inter-regional responsibility in terms of associated atmospheric pollution particularly interesting. Furthermore, Catalonia’s high degree of open markets calls for an analysis that incorporates its trade with the rest of the world. With this aim, a multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model is constructed for Catalonia, the rest of Spain and the rest of the world. Its results are relevant to the proposed analysis and useful for decision-making in environmental and energy policies. Next, a method to break down the MRIO model is considered. Later it is applied to break down and reinterpret, in accordance with the responsible consumption approach, what are known as net multipliers. Through this methodological development the intra- and inter-regional determinants of the impact on CO2 associated with Catalonia’s final demand will be explored in further detail. In order to carry out this work, the satellite accounts of atmospheric pollution for Catalonia for the year 2005 needed to be prepared. This information provides a detailed overview of the pollutant gases released by Catalan productive activity. For example, the data reflect the relevance of the agro-alimentary sector in the emissions responsible for the greenhouse effect, and especially in methane emissions. Consequently, an in-depth study of this activity is carried out using the input-output subsystems technique. In short, the results of this work help to advance in the knowledge of the global consequences of Catalonia’s production and consumption model on nature. Likewise, the methodological developments and progress proposed demonstrate the potential of the input-output analysis for works examining the environmental impacts of the economic process.
