Desempenho de coberturas verdes em zonas urbanas

Abstract

Green-roofs appear as a recent finding in some countries, while in others they are commonly used as a result of constant evolution techniques. It is however verified that its use started many years ago, when early civilizations used hanging gardens in the roofs. Back then, vegetation was seen as purely decorative, but over the years techniques have been improving and with them many studies were developed as a way to prove the benefits related to green-roofs such as economic, social and environmental benefits. In this sense, the creation of green-roofs is nowadays a way of increasing ecological value, comfort and human health as well as a method of revival of the urban areas that are suffering constant disturbance caused by people. In the present master thesis, it is verified the benefits of the use of green-roofs and its practical applications in the city of Lisbon, analysing the interest behind this use. It is also verified by this project that the watertight integrity of the ground, caused by the increasing of massive construction can be made up by the application of green-roofs. Additionally, it is verified that the benefits associated with green-roofs are not only environmental and social, but there are also economic benefits, as the creation of vegetable gardens allowing a sustainable development of cities. Finally, it is an objective of this master thesis to identify the risks and opportunities of green-roofs use in Portugal, suggesting new ways of increasing its application and analysing the willingness of governments and companies to adopt this technique in the sustainable construction.
