Optimização do cultivo de camarinha Palaemonetes varians

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Ditch shrimp (Palaemonetes varians), is a small caridean shrimp with wide geographic distribution in Europe, particularly in salt ponds and estuaries of the Atlantic. The capture of Ditch shrimp is a traditional activity in the region of Andalusia southern Spain. With the decline in traditional salt production, the salt ponds were transformed into fish farms, leading to decrease of the shrimp capture. Some Spanish fishermen, specialized in capturing this species, migrated to salt ponds in Portugal, where they found the ideal conditions for the exploitation. Nowadays, many Portuguese fishermen capture Ditch shrimp in abandoned salt ponds all over the Portuguese coast. This production in extensive systems reaches 200-300 kg/ha/year, enough to supply more than 60 % of the ditch shrimp consumed in Spain. In Portugal, the main sites for the exploitation of this species are in the Tagus estuary. There are many features that make ditch shrimp a species with special interest for aquaculture, besides that, the interest in the ditch shrimp production appears as an important opportunity to promote the development of a new productive economic activity based on sustainable aquaculture compatible with the conservation of natural and cultural values of the region.
