Abstract

The foreseen study aimed to determine the role that the use of certain reading strategies could play in developing skills in reading comprehension in primary school students concerning various content areas. With this purpose, we conceived and applied a didactic intervention focused on tasks involving the use of certain reading strategies: producing strategies before reading, gathering information while reading and validating the hypotheses after reading. This intervention also included tasks promoting the use of knowledge gathered through reading with several purposes. This intervention concerned two content areas: mother tongue and sciences. We collected data on the performance of the primary school students that took part in this experiment, through the activities included in the didactic intervention. The content analysis of these data revealed that students revealed that the students had improved in reading comprehension, but still had some problems concerning the identification of main ideas in the texts. In parallel, we observed that previous knowledge on the subject played a main role on the use of these reading strategies.
