Potencial biotecnológico dos microrganismos extremófilos

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The biotechnological potential of extremophile microorganisms has been getting the increasing attention of the international scientific community. Whereas these organisms used to be seen as simple curiosities, they are now being considered as viable solutions to the economical and/or ecological problems associated with various industrial processes, not only because of their extreme metabolisms, but also because of their enzymes, whose properties often have tremendous biotechnological potential. A collection of prokaryotic strains from hydrothermal springs along the Mid- Atlantic Ridge in the Azores Sea was obtained by ICAT, and provided a valuable opportunity for the discovery of new enzymes with potential industrial applications. In this work, the present knowledge on extremophile microorganisms and their applications in various industries is summarized and, in a second part, a process of screening and selection of a collection of 140 prokaryotic strains in initiated, in the attempt to find new enzymes with biotechnological potential.
