This dissertation describes the development and design of a CNC thermal cutting machine, integrating high-definition plasma and oxy-fuel technologies, with a focus on the mechanical component. The work was carried out at Unisolda S.A., in collaboration with academia, with the main motivation being the creation of robust, precise and economically competitive equipment when compared to existing market solutions. The project encompassed all stages of the development process, from the definition of technical requirements to modelling, component selection and system integration. The adopted methodology followed an iterative approach, including comparative analysis of solutions, three-dimensional CAD modelling and structural simulations using the finite element method. The actuation systems of the X, Y and Z axes were also studied and dimensioned, including the selection of ball screws, gears and servomotors. The results obtained validated the structural design of the cutting table and mechanical subassemblies, ensuring strength, precision and reliability in operation. In addition, the integration of auxiliary systems, such as torch lifting, was achieved, as well as compatibility with the planned industrial plasma and oxy-fuel cutting source. It is concluded that the equipment developed has the potential to enhance the company’s competitiveness and to contribute to technological progress in the industrial cutting sector, establishing a solid foundation for future optimisation and automation.
