Waveforms and estimation methods for automotive LiDAR

Abstract

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors are essential for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), as they produce high-resolution 3D point clouds of the physical surroundings of a vehicle in real-time. However, developing an automotive LiDAR is extremely challenging, given that reliable time-of-flight (ToF) estimations need to be guaranteed across a wide variety of operation conditions, while unit cost should be as low as possible. Time-to-digital conversion is currently the most employed automotive Li- DAR ToF estimation method, given its low cost and simple implementation. However, it only provides optimum estimation within a narrow dynamic range. In addition, it is unable to distinguish signal pulses from interfering pulses. The main objective of this work is thus to develop ToF estimation methods that maximize accuracy, precision, range and robustness to interference of automotive LiDAR systems, while resorting to a low-cost hardware architecture. This thesis first focuses on the optimization of accuracy and precision over the required wide dynamic range, for single-pulsed waveforms captured by a full-waveform receiver. The focus is next shifted towards boosting the interference robustness of a LiDAR sensor, while trading-off as little ToF estimation performance and range as possible. Two novel ToF estimation methods are proposed and experimentally demonstrated to achieve ToF resolutions 100 times below the sampling period. The first method relies on classic digital signal processing methods, whereas the second improves on the first using modern machine learning (ML) models, in particular LightGBM. Both developed methods operate over a wider dynamic range than single-channel time-to-digital converters applied to the same experimental dataset. In order to gain robustness against interfering signals, a novel waveform designed to sacrifice the least amount of range for having enough redundancy to properly identify interfering pulses over a selected operation range, is proposed. Such waveform is composed of two short pulses of different amplitudes and spaced in time by a configurable amount. An interference handling procedure based on measuring the relative position of both pulses is proposed. Proof-of-concept experiments were conducted, showing that the developed method recovered 96.9% of all interference-riddled frames. The ML-based ToF estimation method was adapted to the proposed 2- pulsed waveform, showing that accuracy and precision are preserved even when the pulse of lowest amplitude falls below the noise floor. This work demonstrates that it is possible to maximize the accuracy, precision, range and interference robustness of an automotive LiDAR system, without resorting to either an expensive or complex hardware architecture.
