Abstract

This research studies the role of influencers in the information consumption of young people in Portugal, in the eyes of this target audience, analyzing their information consumption habits, their relationship with influencers and their point of view regarding their role in transmitting information and their role as digital leaders. Literature on the subject was analyzed, with authors arguing that influencers are key players in the fight against disinformation, as well as others saying the opposite, that they are promoters of fake news. The population of this study is young Portuguese people aged between 18 and 30. This study adopted a quantitative approach, using an online questionnaire as the data collection tool, which obtained 322 responses. It was concluded that: young people consume more information on social networks; women and students are the ones who follow influencers the most; the relationship between influencers and followers is not one of friendship; young people are mainly interested in health issues and national current affairs; young people have already learned about a current issue because an influencer talked about it; young people consider influencers to be active members of a given online community.
