Abstract

Set theory, considered by David Hilbert to be "the most extraordinary product of mathematical thinking, one of the most beautiful achievements of human activites in the purely intelligible domain", is one of the biggest conquests of human intelect. This work intends to be a humble approach to Set Theory. lt begins with Cantor and his na'ive Set Theory. Afterwards, Zermelo-Fraenkel Axiomatic System is presented, followed by the cardinal and ordinal number theory. A brief discussion of the Continuum Hypothesis takes place right before the Axiom of Constructibility. Finally, some of the many applications of this last axiom on different areas of Mathematics are mentioned.
