Abstract

Alternate reality games are interactive experiences that combine narrative elements with the real environment, often requiring the integration of different technologies to implement and manage the evolution of the narrative, the integration of real-time data, and the fluid transition of players between digital and physical environments. In this context, this work explores the idea of developing an alternate reality game based on a game engine, proposing that all logic can be defined on the game world, replicating the real geography, with the player’s movement within the game world being dictated by their movement in real scenarios. To this end, a simple narrative compatible with the alternate reality concept was designed, which allowed the definition of a set of basic functionalities necessary for its implementation. Based on this analysis, and adopting the Unreal 5 game engine, specific modules were developed to support aspects such as geolocation, definition of points of interest, and dialogue between the player and game characters. Finally, a proof of concept of an alternate reality game was developed around the narrative and integrating the different proposed functionalities. The work developed allows to demonstrate the potential of game engines to implement key elements for the development of alternate reality games, having also identified, in the specific case of Unreal 5, potential barriers related to the generation of versions for mobile platforms.
