Abstract

With the market becoming increasingly competitive, it is essential for companies to reinvent themselves, using new technologies and new manufacturing techniques to gain a competitive advantage over the rest. In this way, companies are looking to develop new projects, improve existing processes and reduce their production costs, while ensuring an improvement in product quality. This project report describes the work developed in the new aluminium rim anodising sector of RODI Industries, S.A., as part of the Internship/Project/Dissertation curricular unit of the Integrated Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management. In the project carried out in this industry, it was essential, in the first phase, to understand the production process and collect data on the line to analyse and discuss possible improvement actions. After this, a plan of improvement actions was developed, based on Lean and Quality tools, with the aim of stabilising and improving the efficiency of the rim anodising process. During the project, experiments were also carried out on the process baths, namely Anodising and Sealing baths, to reduce costs associated with the line, layout changes were also made. The effectiveness of the measures implemented was assessed in three key aspects: production capacity, rejection and scrap rates and direct production costs. Significant improvements were seen because of the measures implemented, with a 60% increase in production capacity and a reduction in rejection and scrap rates below 5% and 2%, respectively.
