A proposal of deception patterns in game design

Abstract

This research delves into the dynamic interplay between flow, aesthetic friction, and deception patterns in the realm of video game design. Rooted in the theory of flow, the study explores how optimal player engagement arises from a delicate balance between challenge and skill. Aesthetic friction, deliberately introduced as a disruptive element, adds complexity to gameplay, steering players into unknown territories of challenge and discovery. Central to this exploration is the intentional integration of deception patterns. These patterns serve as conduits for storytelling, player agency, and the creation of impactful, memorable gaming experiences. The research underscores the iterative nature of game design, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between flow, aesthetic friction, and deception patterns. Acknowledging the inherent challenges, including a scarcity of comprehensive resources and the indirect nature of game observation, the study contributes to the nascent field of deception in video games. It lays the groundwork for future research initiatives, aiming to deepen our understanding of the interplay between deception patterns, player engagement, and the ever-evolving landscape of video game design.
