Abstract

Ceramics relative density (RD) can depend on various experimental conditions, such as material composition and the used techniques (modern or convencional processes). In this work, we try to predict the impact of these conditions on the RD of ceramics, by applying a regression tree algorithm. This algorithm creates a binary tree representing of the dataset, where branches represent the split rules, and nodes and leaves represent the predicted values. The tree grows from branches that satisfy imposed rules, however, when it´s not allowed to split more, the last obtained node stops growing and becomes a leaf. The considered model input was the type of processes, AM category, Zr dopant, hot isostatic pressing (binary), zirconia and alumina amount and particle size, and sintering temperature and holding time. This data set was divided into two subsets: the training set, used to fit the model with cross-validation, and the test set, used to evaluate the model. The model was created using hyper-parameter selection strategies and pruning of the regression tree. The RMSE and R2 were used as performance evaluation metrics. The developed model easily distinguishes between modern and traditional techniques. AM category and Sintering characteristics are also relevant predictors.
