Design generativo aplicado ao design de uma coleção de vasos

Abstract

This document results from the internship at Estudioama and contains the activities that were developed during the creation of the project. The internship allowed to collaborate and acquire knowledge from experienced designers with a proven track record. The project’s aim was to create a collection of vases to present to Almas Design, and simultaneously understand the advantages and disadvantages in the usage of generative design by a product designer in their workflow. In an initial stage, a theoretical base was established in which occurred a study of generative design, as well as of the different types of Computational Design. There was also a gathering of several examples of ceramic products that were created using generative design. Since it was necessary to establish a know-how in terms of the usage of generative design, a learning stage of the software Grasshopper ensued, this programme was going to be the method of introducing generative design into the project therefor this was a key part of the process. With the creation of the vase collection, it was possible to acknowledge that there are favourable aspects to implementing Generative Design. Some of which are the ability that this form of Computational Design possesses in terms of form-finding, as well as the ability to quickly create several alternatives to the same problem. This will result in being able to utilize the computer in a much earlier stage of the project.

Este documento resulta do estágio curricular realizado no Estudioama, e resume a investigação realizada ao longo do projeto. O estágio permitiu colaborar e adquirir novos conhecimentos com designers com provas dadas no ramo do design. O projeto concretizado tem como objetivo conceber uma coleção de vasos para propor à empresa Almas Design e, simultaneamente, perceber as vantagens e desvantagens da utilização do design generativo por parte de um designer de produto. Numa fase inicial estabeleceu-se uma base teórica onde se fez um estudo do design generativo, assim como dos diferentes tipos de design computacional. Realizou-se também um levantamento de exemplos da implementação do design generativo na conceção de produtos cerâmicos. Uma vez que seria necessário construir uma base de conhecimento em relação ao design generativo de um ponto de vista da sua utilização, foi feita uma aprendizagem generalizada do programa Grasshopper, uma vez que este seria o veículo para a introdução do design generativo no projeto. Com a realização da coleção de vasos foi possível concluir que existem condições favoráveis para a implementação do design generativo, nomeadamente a capacidade que este oferece na procura de forma. E também a capacidade que revela em criar diversas alternativas para o mesmo problema, o que torna o computador numa ferramenta mais atrativa na fase conceptual do projeto.
