Abstract

Several studies demonstrate that atmospheric emissions of anthropogenic origin are inducing the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, causing climate changes on earth. The urban centres, because of their population density and the intense activity that they present appear as foci of this problem, being fundamental to take action in order to minimize their impacts. Since the municipality of Lisbon includes the largest city in Portugal, it becomes evident the importance of knowing its contribution to the national greenhouse gases emissions and to define mitigation strategies accordingly. Thus, the present work determines the balance of CO2 in Lisbon municipality. Aiming at this goal, both the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere as a result of energy consumption as well as the amount of CO2 assimilated by the city's green spaces were determined. It’s possible to conclude, as the outcome of this balance, that the ability of CO2 sequestration in the municipality is meaningless when compared to the amount of emissions of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, within the boundaries of the city. These results are indicative of both the need to take adequate measures and to adopt new politics in order to reduce emissions.
