Ensino Superior, Educação em Português e cidadania global

Abstract

The 21st century citizens must be prepared to local contexts (family, communities of various dimensions, their country), but also for global contexts, since one of the most characteristic features of contemporary society is the fact that it is increasingly globalized. Education appears as an answer to the training needs generated by the exercise of a critical and dynamic citizenship in this globalized society, especially because it must begin as soon as possible, already in kindergarten if possible, but no later than while the children are attending primary school. This conception is at the core of the interests of those who discuss the role played by Education professionals, either in a national or in an international context. Higher Education must also prepare the students for life in a globalized society and that need is especially important in the degrees that train Education professionals. They are supposed to be aware of the characteristics of the society they live in and to develop competences that will allow them to “design” courses for their pupils taking into account the fact that today’s society demands a constant adaptation. Therefore, we analyzed the training we offer to future early childhood educators and teachers of several educational contexts in order to determine in what way teaching the mother tongue to develop competences in oral and written communication will allow these students to become more critical and dynamic citizens and prepare them to play that same role with their future pupils. More concretely, we made a content analysis of the programs of the courses we teach using categories related to the promotion of an education for life in a globalized society.
