Abstract

The tone of electoral political debates is likely to arouse positive or negative effects on the electorate and, thus, interfere with their electoral behavior. Thus, and based on the relation found between the tone of political debates and electoral behavior, this dissertation analyzes how the tone of the political debate between António Costa and Rui Rio influenced voters’ intention to vote in the context of the 2019 legislative elections. To this end, the main objectives of this research are to analyze how the tone of the political debate, positive or negative, was able to influence: (1) voters' evaluation of the candidates according to their performance throughout the debate; (2) the intention of the electorate to go and vote in the election; (3) the intention of voters to vote for the parties of the particular candidates; (4) the voting intention of undecided voters; and, finally, (5) the public issues most discussed during the debate. For this purpose, we used a questionnaire survey, a non-random convenience sampling process, and a quantitative methodology, concluding that the tone of the political debates is indeed likely to influence, even if partially, the electoral behavior.
