Abstract

O presente trabalho explora o comportamento térmico de soluções de polímeros derivados da celulose. As propriedades reológicas destes sistemas desempenham um papel importante em diversas áreas industriais. Desta forma, o controlo do comportamento reológico das soluções destes polímeros, nomeadamente o ajuste da viscosidade através de variações de temperatura ou concentração, é essencial. Nesse sentido, estudámos o efeito da temperatura em soluções aquosas de hidroxipropilmetilcelulose através de medidas reológicas e da transmitância óptica. Testes oscilatórios demonstraram que, para temperaturas elevadas, estas soluções apresentam o comportamento típico de um gel, com os módulo G´ e G´´ praticamente independentes da frequência e G´ maior que G´´. Testes rotacionais a diferentes velocidades de corte mostraram que a gelificação pode ser retardada ou mesmo impedida quando se utilizam velocidades fora do regime Newtoniano. No entanto, é ainda possível determinar para estas condições uma temperatura crítica para a qual a gelificação deveria ocorrer. Estudos da transmitância óptica mostraram que a turvação destas soluções aumenta com a temperatura. Estas observações sugerem que o desenvolvimento de agregados, à medida que a temperatura vai aumentando, poderá estar na origem da formação de uma rede polimérica típica de um sistema gel. ABSTRACT: This present work focuses on the thermal behaviour of cellulose derivatives in aqueous solution. Rheological properties of these polymers solutions play an important role for many industrial applications. Thus, the control of the rheological behaviour of such systems, namely how to tune the viscosity by changing the temperature or concentration, is of enormous interest. In this study, we investigated the effect of temperature on hydroxypropylmethylcellulose solutions, using rheological approaches and optical transmission measurements. Oscillatory tests demonstrated that, for high temperatures, these solutions exhibit a typical behaviour of a gel system, with high storage moduli, G´, and both storage moduli and loss moduli, G´´, show low frequency dependence. Rotational tests at different shear rates showed that gelation can be delayed or even prevented for non - Newtonian shear rates, but the temperatures at which gelation should occur are still visible in the rheological data. Optical transmission measurements demonstrated that turbidity of hidroxypropylmethylcellulose solutions increase with temperature. This and other observations suggested that the development of clusters promotes the formation of a three-dimensional network.
