Abstract

When talking about the relationship between Portugal and China, it is to be noted that during years of encounters and confrontations, China has become an inevitable theme for the Portuguese in the fields of politics, diplomacy and culture. The country was described by the Portuguese and their ever-changing images were created in different dimensions of space and time. Taking the discipline of comparative literature as the point of entry, the intention of this study is to investigate trends of formation and changes of the Chinese image in Portuguese literature. Portuguese literary texts from the 16th to 19th centuries will be selected and analyzed, in which Chinese culture and phenomenon will be emphasized and revealed under this observation; while at the same time it will reflect the perspective and attitude of the observers, in the specific historical context and social environment.
