Abstract

How can the design contribute for the revitalisation of the old crafts that are about to vanish? There is a knowledge around older people about old crafts that are about to vanish if nothing is done to revitalise it. Handmade crafts have a traditional function that are being expropriated from new generation and because of that is losing functionality. This reality, if nothing is done about it the crafts will vanish. From this context this dissertation investigated the knowledge of the design as cultural mediator with aptitude to transcriate the artisan techniques of the old crafts. In this sense, we research the concepts of crafts, transcreation and contemporary jewellery. We made a survey of the crafts in Portugal and selected as a study object a craft from bilros. We analysed products that we consider pertinent to the materialisation of the developed UseBilros project. We intended to create a connection between the past, the present and the future, combining the artisanal crafts with other technologies. Through the simplification of the design of existing crafts, we proposed the creation of collections of contemporary jewellery experienced in diversified materials. We hope that the work developed can be applied to other crafts, enabling it’s revitalisation through the attribution of new meanings.
