Abstract

The work presented in this thesis is a study about systems that use multiple antennas to transmit and receive information (MIMO). The MIMO systems as well as permit, in the transmitter and in the receiver, spatial diversity or beamforming, in environments with high number of independent multipath components, have a superior transmission capacity of more than any other system based on arrays of conventional antennas. The performance of MIMO systems depends on the propagation channel. A complete characterization of the propagation channel for evaluating the capacity of transmission is an important point. Various physical and analytical models for propagation in MIMO channels to calculate the matrix of the channel are studied in this work. Is implemented the Kronecker model (analytical model) to calculate the matrix of the propagation channel, being held an evaluation of this model, for different scenarios of propagation and for different number of antennas of the transmitter and receiver. Is evaluated the performance of MIMO systems, for different scenarios of propagation (macro and micro cellular), for different numbers of antennas in the transmitter and in the receiver, for different spacing between the antennas and, for two strategies for distribution power: equal power and water filling.
