Abstract

This research falls within the context of educational leadership. The purpose is to identify and characterize the style(s) and the effects of leadership exercised by the school director, based on the perception of the pedagogical council members and herself. The theoretical background is based on Bass and Avolio’s “Full- -Range Leadership Theory” (1990,1994,2004), which comprises transformational, transactional and “laissez-Faire” leadership and three leadership outcomes (satisfaction, extra effort and effectiveness). Regarding to the methodology, the research followed a single case study approach, using techniques for collecting and processing information with quantitative and qualitative nature. Data were collected through the “Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire”, originally developed by Avolio and Bass (2004), semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, “fuzzy-set” Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) and content analysis. The results show that transformational leadership is the main style of perceived leadership, followed by transactional and at lower level the “laissez-faire” leadership. There is also evidence of the positive effect of the director's leadership style at the satisfaction, extra effort and effectiveness levels of the pedagogical council members. However, we found that these positive effects do not occur only when one of the leadership styles is present, but two combinations of different leadership styles.
