Abstract

The objective of this study was to understand the didactic potential of the educational sites suggested for year 11 of the Biology and Geology syllabus, so as to explore the theme of the Biological Evolution. In order to attain this objective, a representation of Biology teachers who taught this theme was collected which allowed the investigator to compile a validated analysis of the constraints, perspectives and methods of articulation of these educational sites in the teaching/ learning context. The study followed the methodological framework of a qualitative and interpretative investigation; the data gathered came from two sources: recording grids and surveys done by means of questionnaires. The content analysis which was done contemplated, within the theme of evolutionism, the research of all the sites suggested for year 11 of the Biology syllabus and as a complement other suggestions presented in textbooks. In order to do this, check lists of presence or absence contemplating specifications from three selected domains were drawn up, namely: substantive knowledge; socio-scientific controversies and the implications of Science in Society. The content of the questionnaires which conveyed the teachers’ representations regarding the use or not of the educational sites and the way they use them in the teaching/ learning process was also analysed. The analysis which was produced, based on the representations of these teachers, allowed the investigator to build a fact-supported insight and assume the relevance of such educational resources. This also allowed him to overcome a lack of orientation of his own professional practice, bearing in mind that the starting point was one of absence of knowledge regarding the content of the referred ix educational sites. As for the teacher training, it also emphasized the importance of dealing with the topic of the Biological Evolution. This work provides data which enables those that propose these educational resources to assess their choices and for the potential investigators, it shows paths for studying and ways of processing them.
