Portugal tem sido um destino de sucessivas vagas de imigração, com origem em diversos países do mundo. Por sua vez, também a Escola acolhe nas suas instituições os filhos dos imigrantes a quem a Língua Portuguesa se apresenta como uma língua não materna. Assim, a sociedade, aos poucos e poucos, tem-se tornado cada vez mais diversificada linguística e culturalmente. Dado que estamos a tratar, especificamente, de crianças e jovens, que são o futuro da nossa sociedade, torna-se importante sensibilizar os alunos em particular, assim como a comunidade educativa em geral, para que a integração e o sucesso dos alunos estrangeiros não sejam postos em causa. Desta forma, o grande objetivo do nosso estudo é perceber quais são as representações que os alunos portugueses têm dos alunos estrangeiros, a nível da língua, da cultura e do aspeto físico, para que se possa desenvolver mais e melhor a educação intercultural, de molde a que todos os aprendentes interajam entre si, independentemente das suas nacionalidades, não caindo na “pobreza” de apenas se moverem num mesmo espaço linguístico-geográfico. Para que pudéssemos analisar e identificar as representações dos alunos nativos, aplicámos um inquérito por questionário a uma turma do 6.º ano do 2.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, de uma escola do distrito de Aveiro. A metodologia utilizada no tratamento de dados foi essencialmente qualitativa, havendo, no entanto, recurso a dados quantitativos. Dos vinte alunos inquiridos, apenas treze foram analisados dado que nem todos apresentavam os critérios necessários, ou seja, terem nascido em Portugal, assim como os seus pais. Com os resultados obtidos, podemos concluir que a maioria dos alunos prefere ou afasta determinado colega estrangeiro essencialmente pela representação que têm da língua nativa desse colega. Dos motivos apresentados, quer para essa preferência, quer para esse afastamento, os mais frequentes são a vontade e o gosto em aprenderem essa mesma língua ou, pelo contrário, a dificuldade de comunicação perante uma língua desconhecida.

Portugal has been a destination of successive waves of immigration, originated from various countries of the world. In turn, the school also welcomes in its institutions the immigrant’s children whom the Portuguese language is presented as a second language. Thus, society, little by little, it has become increasingly diversified linguistically and culturally. Since we are dealing specifically with children and young people, who are the future of our society, it is important to touch students in particular, as well as the educational community in general, so that the integration and success of foreign students are not jeopardized. Thus, the main objective of our study is to understand which are the Portuguese student’s representations on foreign students, about the level of language, culture and physical appearance, so we can develop more and better intercultural education in order that all learners interact with each other, regardless of their nationality, not falling in the "poverty" of only moving in one linguistic-geographic space. So that we could analyze and identify representations of native students, we applied a questionnaire to a group of the 6. º year of the second stage of basic education, of a school district in Aveiro’s District. The methodology used in data processing was essentially qualitative, having, however, the use of quantitative data. Of the twenty students interviewed, only thirteen were analyzed because not all fulfilled the necessary criteria, ie, they were born in Portugal, as well as their parents. With these results, we conclude that most students prefer or keep away a foreign colleague essentially because of their representation of the colleague’s native language. The most frequent advanced explanations either for that preference, or for that departure are the willingness and relish to learn that same language or, on the contrary, the difficulty of communication when facing an unknown tongue.
