Abstract

Dementia is a consequence of aging that results in a public health problem. This is a medical problem that growth can occur at any age, especially in the more advanced. This research represents a cross-sectional design and wants to check if there is a relationship between the level of education, professional activities, leisure activities and dementia. To do this, we evaluated a sample of 62 individuals, of whom 17 were diagnosed with dementia and 21 without dementia. Assessment instruments administered were the following: Mental State Examination (Mini Mental State Exam – MMSE; Folstein, Folstein, & McHugh, 1975; portuguese version: Guerreiro et al., 1994); Rating Scale Clinical Dementia (Clinical Dementia Rating – CDR; Morris, 1993; portuguese version: Garrett et al., 2008). From the results, we highlight the existence of statistically significant relationships between leisure activities and the development of dementia and the absence of statistically significant differences between the level of education, professional activities and the development of dementia. Leisure activities turn out to be important variables in the no development of dementia, taking as fundamental elements in a preventive intervention.
