Abstract

This project report aims to contribute to the study of the female character in operas of the Italian romantic period (19th century). It has two principal aims. On one hand, a study of the construction of a character in theater and of the methods, which currently are more frequent in the process of its conception is undertaken. On the other hand, it is shown that an understanding of the role of facial micro expressions of basic emotions is essential for a better interpretation of the character. Furthermore, research on the romantic period and on the role of women in Italian operas of the nineteenth century offers the necessary background. The additional purpose of this work is the staging and interpretation of an artistic project during approximately 45 minutes, comprising ten arias for soprano, which correspond to ten different characters (and ten operas respectively) of five different nineteenth century Italian composers. This experience has shown that a correct interpretation of an aria should consider, among other aspects, the aesthetic characteristics of the time and the artistic movement in which the opera and the composer integrate themselves. The same applies to the personality and emotional complex of the character, in addition to an adequate vocal performance. This is only possible with a high level of preparation of the actor-singer, due to quite demanding performative techniques that enable him to reach the spectator with the truth of the character's emotions.
