Abstract

Currently in Portugal, there is an important set of cogeneration units and units dedicated to the production of electricity, which produce heat and electricity from biomass combustion. The combustion of biomass produces a solid residue, ash, whose proper management is of the greatest interest, not only economically but also environmentally. The research presented in this thesis mainly aims to study mobilization of ash from biomass elements in forest soil as the water percolates into the soil result from rain plays an important role in the mobilization of constituents of the ash applied to the soil, may cause the export of elements contained in the ash for bodies of water. In order to evaluate this option valuation ash were conducted field and laboratory tests, through the application of gray soil, soil samples being collected for characterization and subsequent extraction of soluble elements, as well as samples of water percolation in order to evaluate the effect of leaching through precipitation. The results revealed that the dose used in the field trial did not influence the soil either positively or negatively, in addition to an insignificant increase of pH. For the laboratory test, performed with a higher dose, an increase of pH, CEC, exchangeable Ca and decreased exchangeable Al, influencing the mobility of some elements.
