Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to go deeper into the problematic issue of parent participation in teacher evaluation. We shall put this theme in the context of the historical evolution of school and its scientific approach, studying school as a specific organisation. We shall make reference to parent participation in school, having as its basis the pluridimensional school and its social function. We shall also highlight teacher evaluation and teaching staff representation. For this study a question was raised which served as the guiding principal throughout all this process and one for which we have tried to find an answer: · What are the teacher representations in the face of parent or guardian participation in the evaluation of teaching staff? Therefore, this research was developed which has the following aims: 1. To evaluate how receptive teachers are to parent/guardian participation in teacher evaluation; 2. To analyse the relationship between the independent variables, viewed individually, and the attitudes in the face of proposed change. In order to respond to such a question, a research plan was drawn up with a view to checking the relationships between a set of independent variables (gender, age, educational qualifications, teaching grade, length of service in teaching and academic level) and the variable which we take as being dependent: the degree in which teachers are receptive to the idea of parent/guardian participation in teacher evaluation, or in other words, the attitudes, be they more or less favourable, which teachers adopt in the face of the proposed change. With these aims in mind, a research of a quantitative nature was conducted using a sample of teachers from a council situated in the centre of Portugal’s seaboard, which reflects on the attitudes of teachers in the face of parent/guardian participation in teacher evaluation, and tries to understand and speculate about the phenomenon through the formulation of hypothesis regarding the relationship between the variables. In methodological terms, the research was carried out in accordance with an empirical and comparative plan, supported by data collected on a scale of attitudes, adapted and validated for the purpose. In this way, from the results obtained it can be seen that teachers are still not very receptive to the idea of parent/guardian participation in teacher evaluation. The results provide us with some issues worthy of consideration and thought.
