Una nueva estrategia para competir

Abstract

A la luz de los cambios que están ocurriendo, vemos como las estrategias básicas para competir (1) diferenciación, (2) liderazgo en precios, y (3) alta segmentación, empiezan a quedarse cortas si pretendemos aplicarlas en un horizonte de largo plazo, en donde el corto plazo presenta una alta e impredecible turbulencia en un ambiente hipercompetitivo, y las ventajas competitivas antes “sostenibles en el tiempo” son destruidas en el fiero mundo de la competencia. Las maravillas tecnológicas aparecen de la noche a la mañana y agresivos competidores globales ingresan en escena; los mercados evolucionan rápidamente y los libros de reglas y de estrategias genéricas ya no funcionan. Las fuentes tradicionales de ventajas ya no proveen seguridad en el largo plazo: Liderazgo en precios y calidad no son suficientes para asegurar el éxito. Ser el primero tampoco significa ser el mejor. Los “peces grandes se comen a los peces chicos” ya no se aplica, y surgen nuevas reglas: “los peces rápidos se comen a los peces lentos”.
