There is a growing trend in foreign language teaching methodology and research to concentrate the learning experience on performing acts and interactive processes of communication. This stress may occur at the expense of language learning as a way of uncovering culture in its various objects and traces. From our standpoint, culture needs not to be reduced to a paradigm of codified behaviours that hold the key to successful communication and social integration. We regard culture as an aggregate of shared signs by any given social community that the learner undertakes to decipher and contrast with his own signs. Our objective is therefore to replace culture at the core of the learning process not as modus operandi nor encyclopedic knowledge, but as an open text whereby iconic figures operate as part of its grammar.
