研究經學與中國古代文學的關係，既不意味著提倡復古尊經，也不是對儒家經學進行聲討和清算，而是以平實的心態，本著尊重歷史、尊重事實的客觀態度，把它作為一種中國文學史上的重要現象來加以實事求是的探討。這本書從詩歌、散文、辭賦、史傳文學、民間文學、宋詞、小說戲曲七個方面，討論了經學與中國古代文學的關係，綱舉目張，別有創見，很適合經學、文學以及古代文化的研究者參考。
