Abstract

ABSTRACT: This research has as its general objective: "Conduct a study based on the characteristics and profiles of the academic research community of the University of Costa Rica to elaborate a cartography that allows to identify its specific research areas and themes, the universities in which they carried out their postgraduate studies and the type of established and current relationships, relations with universities and academic groups from abroad, participation in academic research networks, research management initiatives and strategies, relations with the productive sectors, government, State institutions, social organizations and other bodies and entities, as well as their prospective assessment of research policies that exist in the university and the management that is carried out to comply with them." This report is done with the results of the descriptive and exploratory research carried out with the research community of the University of Costa Rica between 2012 and 2013. This project had the collaboration of 204 people as informants; all of them part of the faculty of the University. The investigation was carried out through the application of an online questionnaire which was sent to a total of 815 people who are registered in a list provided by they Research Vice-Rectory in 2012. Concluding considerations and recommendations include the following: • In accordance with the research results shown here, it could be said that in the UCR, initiatives and actions to improve the work of the research, in addition to being complex, present a dynamic proactive orientation. Even though there little follow up from the university community, whose participation as informants was relied on for this research, through the obtained information tendencies, advances and equally outstanding tasks can be identified or even tasks that merit the development of better organized activities with a more systemicity. It may be necessary to revise the indicators on the basis of which research management development is being carried out. • Reducing gender disparity is another task that the university must continue to develop efforts and incisive management. It is clear that it is not easy to permeate and change a culture of discrimination, that as in the case of the Costa Rican culture, it systemically reiterates in reproducing gender inequality as the foundation and basis of sociability. Such discrimination and inequality, as is well known, also affects other sectors of the national population including particularly indigenous communities.
