Abstract

ABSTRACT Problem statement: the behavior of the new zirconias with gradient resistance after routine protocols of chairside clinical adjustments, as well as under rapid sintering protocols, is still unknown. Objective: evaluate the effect of rapid sintering and simulation of wear/clinical adjustments on mechanical properties of gradient zirconia. Materials and methods: 160 samples were divided into 8 groups, ZirCAD LT (control) and ZirCAD Prime, with and without wear, and conventional or rapid sintering protocol. They were milled in bars for a 3-point bending test, also evaluating the modulus of elasticity and reliability. Weibull statistics were performed with the flexural strength data. Surfaces were analyzed by electron microscopy. Flexural strength data were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA (α=0.05); and Tukey's test (p0.05), to evaluate differences between groups. The modulus of elasticity with Mood's median for nonparametric data.. Results: conventional sintering showed higher strength compared to speed sintering (P=0,000); wear and polishing protocol showed increased flexural strength of ZirCAD LT (P=0,022), but decreased reliability, Prime showed to be a stiffer material compared to control zirconia, and the stiffness of both materials increased with the abrasion and polishing protocol (P=0,011). Conclusions: neither rapid sintering nor simulation of occlusal adjustments caused a significant change in zirconia with resistance gradient, but conventional sintering showed a higher resistance and reliability than speed sintering, while conventional zirconia showed to be more sensitive to surface and sintering treatments. Keywords: zirconia; gradient resistance; grinding; polishing; fast sintered.
