Las hembras frecuentemente invierten ma ́s que los machos en cuido parental, pero en sistemas sociales monogamos, los machos invierten tanto como las hembras en el cuido de su progenie y se estima que esta contribucion masculina es esencial para el exito reproductivo en estos sistemas. Aqui describimos el numero de visitas, la tasa de alimentacion a polluelos, y el tiempo en el nido invertidos por cada sexo de un ave canora socialmente monogama, el mirlo pardo o yiguirro (Turdus grayi). Observamos 16 nidos en San Jose, Costa Rica. Ambos sexos alimentaron polluelos a una tasa similar, pero las hembras visitaron los nidos ma ́s frecuentemente que los machos. La tasa de alimentacion de ambos sexos se mantuvo similar aun despues de controlar por la edad de los polluelos. La tasa de alimentacion fue bastante variable entre machos (minimo 1 – ma ́ximo 15 visitas / 2h) y esta variacion puede estar relacionada con la probabilidad de que los machos sean los parientes biologicos de la progenie del nido que atienden. Las hembras permanecieron mas tiempo en el nido que los machos pero los machos tendieron a mantenerse cerca del nido para defenderlo de depredadores. Adema ́s, la contribucion masculina durante el periodo de cria en el nido estuvo relacionada con el exito reproductivo.
Females often invest more in parental care than males, but in socially monogamous systems, males invest as much as females in caring for their offspring, and male contribution is believed essential for reproductive success in these systems. Here we describe the number of visits, the feeding rate to their nestlings, and the time on the nest invested by each sex of the socially monogamous songbird, the Clay-colored Thrush (Turdus grayi), for 16 nests in San Jose, Costa Rica. Both males and females fed their nestlings at a similar rate, but females visited the nests more frequently than males. The feeding rate of both females and males was also similar when controlled by age of nestling. The feeding rate was highly variable across males (minimum 1, maximum 15 visits per 2 h), possibly related to the probability of males fathering the offspring of the attended nest. Females spent more time on the nest than males, but males tended to remain near the nest to defend it from predators. Moreover, male contribution during the nestling period correlated with the reproductive success.
