Este artículo ofrece algunos elementos de discusión para conceptuar los grupos que emergen en el contexto de la comunicación mediada por computadora. Primeramente, se examina el concepto de comunidad a partir de perspectivas teóricas de las ciencias sociales. Se discuten seguidamente las principales concepciones de la relación entre lo virtual y lo real, y sus aplicaciones a la noción de comunidad. Finalmente, se sugiere una definición alternativa de “comunidad virtual”, más pertinente para dar cuenta de los intercambios sociotécnicos propios a Internet.
This paper offers some elements of discussion to conceptualize the groups emerging in the context of computer-mediated-communication. First, the notion of community is examined using some theoretical perspectives in the field of social sciences. Second, the main conceptions of the relation between the virtual and the real are discussed, applied also to the concept of community. In conclusion, an alternative definition of “virtual community” is suggested in order to account for the sociotechnical exchanges that characterize the Internet.
