Abstract

La identidad costarricense es hoy, como lo ha sido desde hace más de un siglo, fuerte y confiada, al tiempo que está en crisis y es asediada por peligrosas fuerzas contaminantes, que provienen del exterior. Esto es lo que podríamos llamar la “contradicción original” de dicha identidad, su genético “ying- yang”. La historia y condición actual de tal identidad es de alguna importancia porque ha sido la base de un exitoso proyecto nacional, sin paralelo en la mayor parte de América Latina, y aún más, del mundo. En efecto, la exitosa articulación de la identidad nacional costarricense por las élites intelectuales y su aceptación y transformación por el resto de la sociedad, ha sido el fundamento de una política hegemónica, capaz de institucionalizar la democracia electoral, extender un mínimo de servicios sociales a la población como un todo y facilitar algún grado de movilidad social. La solidez de la obra es extraordinaria e incuestionable: con dos breves pero notables interrupciones, la dictadura de los Tinoco (1917-1919) y la guerra civil de 1948, el estado-nación democrático de los costarricenses, que empezó a configurarse en el último tercio del siglo XIX, duró a lo largo del siglo XX.
