EL CONCEPTO DE DESARROLLO SUSTENTABLE Y SU APLICACIÓN AL MANEJO COSTERO INTEGRADO

Abstract

Como consecuencia del rápido crecimiento y desarrollo de las poblaciones mundiales, que utilizan cada vez más los recursos que nos ofrece la naturaleza, se sobrepasan generalmente lascapacidades de recuperación del medio ambiente y se produce desequilibrio, destrucción o incluso pérdida de los ecosistemas.Las poblaciones, en lo particular, y las organizaciones, a nivel internacional, están preocupadas actualmente por la utilización de los recursos costeros. Se han propuesto algunos conceptosteóricos tales como el Desarrollo Sustentable, cuyo fin es promover el uso racional de los recursos para que así las futuras generaciones también puedan disfrutar de estos. Es fundamental, por ende, tomar como punto de partida el conocimiento del medio ambiente, de los recursos existentes y de los procesos mediante los cuales dichos recursos se han mantenido, para así buscar estrategias para su uso y protección. Las áreas costeras revelan usos múltiples,tales como asentamientos urbanos e industriales, pesca, turismo y transporte marítimo, entre otros; cada uno de estos usos produce desgaste de recursos y contaminación, por lo que se hacenecesario establecer un marco regulador para administrar debidamente las áreas costeras con el objeto de mejorar las condiciones de vida y proteger los ecosistemas costeros.
