This essay presents a conceptual background and proposes a possible path that could be followed by the University of Costa Rica (UCR) in order to promote inter and transdisciplinarity in higher education, including the creation of new transdisciplinary careers. The ultimate goal is that UCR can face the challenge - as other universities around the world are – of evolving from a fragmented disciplinary organization, towards a transdisciplinary mindset in research, outreach, and mainly education.
