Se analizan aspectos históricos, culturales y socio-económicos, que intentan explicar el real y verdadero problema de salud pública que significan hoy en día las hemoglobinopatías, en una región geográfica ecológicamente heterogénea, como lo es la Cuenca del Caribe. Se relatan los hallazgos obtenidos en ésta en tomo a las frecuencia de estos trastornos hereditarios de la hemoglobina, haciéndose especial hincapié sobre las hemoglobinas S y C, Y los síndromes talasémicos.
