Informes previos muestran que el tepezcuintle es comúnmente infestado por parásitos gastrointestinales (PGI), principalmente por Eucoccidiida y helmintos; sin embargo, no existe información disponible sobre la frecuencia de estos parásitos y su excreción de huevecillos en heces en diferentes momentos a lo largo de un año. Esta información puede proveer un fundamento valioso para el establecimiento de estrategias de control contra PGI en tepezcuintles en cautiverio. Los objetivos del presente trabajo fueron determinar la prevalencia de los géneros y órdenes de PGI que infestan al tepezcuintle en cautiverio y describir la dinámica de excreción de huevecillos y ooquistes fecales en un año. Diez tepezcuintles fueron muestreados (heces) dos veces por mes durante 12 meses. Las muestras fecales se procesaron por las técnicas de Flotación centrifugada y McMaster. Se determinaron dos órdenes: Strongylida y Eucoccidiida y dos géneros Strongyloides y Trichuris. Las prevalencias de huevecillos del orden Strongylida, ooquistes de Eucoccidiida y huevecillos de Trichuris sp. en los animales fue de 10 al 20 % en ciertos meses del año. El género Strongyloides fue el más importante, encontrándose de 60 a 100 % de los animales durante todo el año. La excreción promedio de huevecillos en el grupo estudiado fue de 45 a 372 huevecillos por gramo de heces. Los tepezcuintles en cautiverio en Yucatán están parasitados por Strongyloides sp. durante todo el año. Ocasionalmente estos animales tienen ooquistes de Eucoccidiida y huevecillos de Strongylida y Trichuris sp.
Previous reports showed that the tepezcuintle (Agouti paca) is commonly infested by gastrointestinal parasites (GIP), mainly Eucoccidiida and helminths. However, there is no available information on the frequency of those parasites and their faecal egg excretions at different moments during the year. These information would provide a valuable baseline for the establishment of control strategies against GIP in tepezcuintles under captivity. The objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence of GIP orders and genera that infest tepezcuintles under captivity and, to describe the dynamics of faecal egg and oocyst excretion in a year. Ten tepezcuintles were sampled (faeces) twice every month for twelve months. The faecal samples were processed by the flotation and McMaster techniques. Two orders of parasites were determinated: Strongylida and Eucoccidiida. Two genera of nematodes were also determinated: Strongyloides and Trichuris. The prevalence of Strongylida eggs, Eucoccidiida oocysts and Trichuris sp. eggs reached 10-20 % of animals in certain months. The most important genus was Strongyloides, found in 60 to 100 % of the animals year round. The average excretion of eggs in the group was 45 to 372 eggs per gram. Tepezcuintles kept under captivity in Yucatan are parasited with Strongyloides sp throughout the year, but only occasionally had oocysts of Eucoccidiida and eggs of Strongylida and Trichuris sp.
