El artículo expone acerca del significado e importancia de los nombres geográficos o topónimos, así como algunas implicaciones, problemática y sugerencias para la investigación a escala regional y local. También hace énfasis en la necesidad de la normalización toponímica, de la injerencia y mandato de las autoridades oficiales; así el caso de la Comisión Nacional de Nomenclatura, entidad costarricense que vela por los valores culturales que encierra esta temática.

The article expose about the meaning and importance of geographical names or toponymy, thus some implications, problems and suggestions for the research to regional and local scale. In addition it emphasizes on the need of standardization for toponymy on the decisions and orders from the official authorities. Therefore the public corporation “Comisión Nacional de Nomenclatura” is taking care of cultural values that surround this thematic.
