Abstract

In the last six years, the first forays into playwriting by young Costa Ricans have been published in six anthologies. This study examines romantic relationships, which are always in a process of rupture, in the three works from the most recent anthology, Dramaturgia costarricense: Expresiones escénicas emergentes(2012). Although the situations leading to the separations of the young characters are varied, the weight of social expectations in contemporary Costa Rica is a common factor in the dissolution of their romantic relationships. Another cause of their break-ups is the lack of a real dialogue between the young people despite all the technological advances that supposedly facilitate communication. The emerging Costa Rican theatre invites its audience to rethink the social roles of men and women and to recognize the harm caused by negative interactions in romantic couples’ everyday communication.
