En este estudio se analiza el pasado y el presente de la enseñanza de la lengua española en la educación preescolar costarricense. Para tal efecto se parte del análisis del área de lenguaje en los diferentes programas emitidos por el Ministerio de Educación Pública, de 1962 a la fecha y del estado actual de los estudios sobre la competencia comunicativa de este grupo etario. Este artículo concluye con una propuesta para la enseñanza de la lengua española en la educación preescolar de frente al nuevo milenio. Asimismo, se ofrecen lineamientos para enriquecer el trabajo de ese nivel del sistema educativo, en los componentes: discursivo ?expresión y comprensión orales, lectura y escritura-, léxico y fonológico; todos a partir de objetivos y actividades que tienen como meta enriquecer la competencia comunicativa del educando. This study analyzes the past and present of Spanish teaching in Costa Rican preschooler education. It begins with the analysis of the language area in several programs develop by the Ministerio de Educación Pública (Public Education Ministry) since 1962 to our days and second, the actual course of the studies about communicative competence of preschool children. This editorial concludes with a proposal to Spanish language teaching in preschooler education in order to face the new millennium. Likewise, it offers a guide to improve the work of this level of the educative system, including discursive (oral comprehension and oral expression, reading and writing), lexical and phonological components, all of the them with objectives and activities that have the goal to raise the communicative competence of students.
