Los adolescentes representan una parte importante de la población tanto en países en desarrollo como en los desarrollados y su número absoluto y relativo ha aumentado considerablemente en el mundo.En Costa Rica los adolescentes (grupo de edad definido por la OMS entre los 10 a 20 años) ocupan un 25.4% de la población total. La población de 0 a 20 años es de 50.7% de la cual el 50.1% es de adolescentes.
